Early History
The airline was founded on February 1941, making it as Asia’s oldest carrier that is still operating under its original name.
Philippine Airlines was started by a group of entrepreneurs led by Andres Soriano, the Philippines leading business man at that time and former Senator Ramon Fernandez, who served as the president and chairman.
The airline’s first operations took place on March 1941 with a sole Beechcraft Model 18 NPC-54 on a daily flight between Manila and Baguio. However, during the World War II the airlines services were interrupted from the last quarter of 1941 to 1945.
Upon the outburst of the Pacific War, the two model 18s as well as their pilots were pushed into military service. In which, they were used to evacuate American fighter pilots to the land down under Australia.
After the World War II Philippine Airline resumed its operations on February 1946, after a 5 year haul the airline has returned to its original base in Nielsen Airport in Makati.
However, the airport was heavily damage during the WW II and was modernized and refurbished by PAL, quickly becoming as the official port for Filipinos as well as foreigners who travel international and domestic flights.
From then on Philippine Airlines has expanded and became the Asia’s leading airlines.
The fall and rise of PAL
However, in 1997 the Philippine Airlines had faced it’s biggest challenge, as the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis outbreak, it severely affected the airline which resulted to the cut down of its operations in some domestic and international destination as well as terminating the jobs of employees.
Eventually, the airline was put under receivership but they have been able to survived challengers which in 2007 they have regained its glory and ambitious plans to restore its services as well as expanding and providing the customer a quality of service.
