Ceremonial flight was launched to Al Ain on November 5, 2003 and started the commercial flight by launching service to Beirut on November 13, 2003. The route expanded month after month of operation until the airline set up the Etihad Holidays as its subsidiary airline.
The first direct flight from the United Arab Emirates to Geneva was launched in June 2004 followed by direct flights to Brussels and Toronto. Etihad airways had grown to 30 destinations within 30 months and still hoping to achieve the target of 70 destinations before 2010.
Since its inception, the airline has not yet made a profit but continues to grow. It doubles its growth in its first four years of operation. Six million passengers and 330,000 tons of cargo were being transported by Etihad airways in 2008.
In 2007, the airline ranked among the top ten airlines worldwide in terms of growth according to the International Air Transport Association. Etihad Crystal Cargo operates two A300-600F cargo aircraft and handled 115,000 tonnes of cargo uplifted from Etihad Airways main hub.
The Abu Dhabi International airport will be equipped with new facilities as well as new aircraft such as Boeing 777-F and AirBus A330-200F will be added to Etihad Airways fleet to handle more than 500,000 tonnes yearly. This would mean cargo expansion and additional revenue.
