Operation
EgyptAir is a state owned airline with special legislation permitting the management of the airline to operate independently without any government interference. Air Sinai and EgyptAir Express are wholly owned by Egyptair. The EgyptAir Holding Company has 60% stakes in Air Cairo and 20% stake in Smart aviation Company. Egyptair has 7,600 employees working in the airline.
EgyptAir became the first IOSA certified airline in Africa and Middle East. The airline was rated 3 Star Quality Certified Airline by Skytrax in 2006.
Passenger’s traffic increased to 7.8 million passengers in 2007. The regional subsidiary Egyptair Express was launched using Embraer E-170 that links Cairo with Hurghada, Luxor, Sharm El-Sheikh, Marsa alam, Abu Simbel, Aswan and Alexandria.
EgyptAir Holding Company recorded a substantial profit reaching US$170 million during the financial year 2007 to 2008. The airline also acquired tremendous total group revenue and assets as compared to the previous years. The Chief Executive Board of Star Alliance voted Egyptair as a future member of the alliance.
Cooperative and commercial agreements with several Star Alliance members had been forged by the airline including Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, Thai Airways International, Austrian Airlines, South African Airways, Turkish Airlines, Swiss International airlines and bmi. EgyptAir became the 21st member of the Star Alliance after nine months being invited.
Destinations
The airline introduced new destinations and routes in 2009 such as Catania, Abuja and Dar es Salam. EgyptAir has code-share agreements with the following airlines such as Asiana, Austrian Airlines, bmi, Gulf Air, Korean Air, Lufthansa, Olympic Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Saudi Arabian Airlines and Singapore Airlines.
In addition, other Star alliance partners that Egyptair has code-share are South African Airways, Syrian Arab Airlines, TAP Portugal, Thai Airways International, Tunis air, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines and Yemenia.
