Druk air is the national airline of the Kingdom of Bhutan. Its main base is at Paro Airport in the western Dzongkhag. The airline operates scheduled flight network within the South Asian region.
Druk Air was established in 1981, a decade after Druk Gyalpo open up the Kingdom from self-imposed isolation. Druk Air is the only airline flying in Bhutan and become the lifeline for the Bhutanese people with the outside world.
It also helps in supporting the export markets and the emerging inbound tourism. The Indian government set up a committee to study the requirements of the airline.
Due to the emerging competition, the Bhutan government in 1983 ordered one Dormier 228-200. The inaugural flight of the airline was in February 1983 with Flight 101 departing from Paro to kalkota.
The flight was operated three times a week for the first four weeks and after which scheduled as daily flights. The airline was responsible for the maintenance and operation of Paro airport infrastructure before the establishment of the Department of Civil Aviation in 1986.
On October 30, 1986, the airline commenced flights to Dhaka in Bangladesh. For the first time in the country’s history, the government of Bhutan made a commercial loan to finance for the purchase of aircraft.
When the BAe 146 was delivered to Paro airport, the airline was able to widen its network to link Paro with Delhi, Bangkok and Kathmandu. Drukair hired seven flight attendants who were trained by Thai Airways International.
In addition, the airline achieved an average load factor of 50 to 60 percent during the first full year of BAe 146. In its effort to strengthen the airlines services, Drukair invited and submitted the management of Bombardier, AirBus, Boeing and Embraer to demonstrate whether they can meet the operational requirement of the airline.
A memorandum of understanding was signed by AirBus with Drukair for two 114 seat AirBus A319-115 aircraft. It was on October `19, 2004 when the first AirBus A319 arrived in Bhutan and took a country wide flight.
A new Air Service Agreement was signed by the government of India and Bhutan that allows Drukair to increase the number of flights between the two countries. The cities of Chennai, Guwahati and Mumbai were the additional destinations included in the agreement
In June 2008, Drukair reduced the frequencies of operation across its network and announced to increase in airfares due to the hikes in the price of oil as well as the operational costs.
In order to keep and meet the utilization rate and maintenance of the aircraft, Drukair leases its aircraft to other airlines such as Indian airlines, Bangkok Airways and Myanmar Airways International.
