The involvement of the Cuban government to this various creation of organizations helped a lot for the airline to be internationally recognized.
Refurbishment of aircraft
Spare parts of the Soviet-built aircraft became hard to find that is why Cubana airline decided to refurbished some of its aging aircraft. However, due to some restrictions, Cubana airline started a long-term renovation in 2004.
As part of the refurbishment, the airline sought to upgrade the technical support capabilities of the airline. A joint venture was established between the Iberia airlines of Spain and the Cubana Airlines in order to maintain Western-built aircraft including Boeing and Airbus aircrafts.
The first Ilyushin IL-96-300 was received by the airline in December 2005 and made its first official flight covering the route Havana-Buenos Aires in January 2006.
