Airlines history

Due to prolonged financial problems, Viasa the flag carrier of Venezuela ceased its operation after 37 years of service in January 1997. The idea to create a new flag carrier for Venezuela was proposed in May 2001.

However, the proposed project was put to hold. Fortunately, Hugo Chavez, the President of Venezuela, signed a decree formally establishing the new airline early 2004. The decree was published in the official gazette of Venezuela. Thus, the new flag carrier of Venezuela was named Conviasa.

The inaugural flight had flown from the airport in Charallave to Santiago Marino International Airport. A month after its inauguration, Conviasa airline began its international and national operations. The ministry of production and commerce originally ran the operation of Conviasa but the Ministry of Infrastructure shortly took over.

Jose David Cabello Rondon replaced Wilmer Castro Sotelo as head of Conviasa in April 2006. The management of Conviasa had passed from one person to another like Ramon Alonzo Carrizales Rengifo in July 2006 until Franklin Martinez became the president of the airline. The Venezuela government owned eighty percent share in the airline while twenty percent share to the regional government of Nueva Esparta.
