Carpatair was established and started operation in Cluj-Napoca in February 1999. It was formed and operating one leased Yakovlev Yak-40 aircraft from Moldavian airlines as Veg air. Its present name was adopted when Swiss and Swedish investors took a 49% stake in the company in December 1999. Swiss and Swedish shareholders owned 49% while Romanian shareholders owned 51% stake in the airline. The current chief Executive and President of Carpatair is Nicole Petrov and employs 450 staff.

Carpatair was of the first airlines that operates from historical region of Transylvania an international service. The operation in the said region was very successful because there was no much competition from other airline company. In terms of market share against its competitor Romanian airline TAROM, Carpatair evidently had a nice edge.

Carpatair has various ticketing agreement with major airlines such as Lufthansa, Air France and KLM.Ukraine to Lviv is the first destination for the Carpatair routes expansion in 2006. Through connecting flights, the city is connected to the Timisoara hub and to all Italian and German destinations. A modern 50-seat Saab 2000 operated the flight.

As of February 2009, the Carpatair fleet was consist of one BAe 146-200 aircraft that can accommodate 100 passengers and operates domestic routes in European destinations. The airline has three Fokker 100 aircraft that can accommodate 105 passengers and serves the route from Milan to Bergamo, Venice. Carpatair was the biggest operator of Saab 2000 in the world because it has 14 Saab 2000 aircraft that operates domestic and European destinations.   

Achievements of the airline

Carpatair has obtained several achievements over the years. In 2002, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania and Bucharest awarded the airline as 7th place among the large enterprises in Bucharest in terms of Transportation.   In 2003, the Romanian Civil Aeronautical Authority had awarded Honorary Diploma to Carpatair President Nicolae Petrov for supporting and promoting the civil aviation activities in Romania.

On the same year, it was also recognized and awarded among other national private companies as first place in “Air transport by schedule” that was again obtained by the airline in 2005. Carpatair received the most dynamic airline and Top of excellence in business award in 2006 given by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Romania as well as the Bucharest Business Week.
