Britannia Airways was renamed as Thomsonfly in 2005 and was the largest charter airline in the United Kingdom. Its main hubs were Manchester, London Gatwick and London Luton while its secondary hubs are Birmingham and Newcastle.
It was in December 1961 the airline was established and started its operations as Euravia in May 1962. The airline operates for Universal Sky Tours on inclusive tour holidays under the Lockheed Constellations. Euravia had taken over its rival charter airline Skyways in 1962. Skyways are one of the foremost independent airlines in United Kingdom.
Skyways associate Skyways Coach-Air is not included in the takeover. Skyways Coach Air was established to operate low-fare coach-air services in several cities in Europe and London. Eric Rylands founded it in the early 1950’s. Euravia acquired the Skyways while the Skyways Coach-Air was taken over by Dan-Air.
The name Britannia Airways was adopted to coincide with the re-equipping of Bristol Britannia turboprop airliner in August 1964. The airline became a part of International Thomson Organization that is Canadian-owned. It was the first European charter operator that utilized Boeing 737-200 and Boeing 767. Thomson Travel Group, the parent company of the Britannia Airways purchased Orion Airways and Horizon Travel and was later integrated to Britannia Airways.
Britannia Airways formed its wholly owned subsidiary Britannia GmbH in 1997. Britannia GmbH was established to operate long and short haul flights from Germany, Austria and Switzerland tour operators. However, the subsidiary airline Britannia GmbH ceased its operation in March 2001.
The Preussag AG of Germany acquired Thomson Travel Group and Britannia Airways in 2000. Britannia Airways was rebranded as Thomsonfly to enhance the reorganization of the TUI’s UK operation. Thomsonfly became the trading name of the Britannia Airways and carried the colours and logo of Thomson. In addition, the company’s legal name was changed to Thomsonfly Limited instead of Britannia Airways Limited in November 2005.
