Biman Bangladesh Airlines was a wholly owned airline by the Bangladesh government until July 2007. Also that month the airline was transformed as the country’s biggest Public Limited Company by Caretaker Government of Bangladesh.

Early History

The airline was established on January 1972 as the countries national airline under Bangladesh Biman Ordinance or Presidential Order No. 126. The plan to launch the carrier was taken by 2,500 former staffs, aircraft and facilities of Pakistan International Airlines that submitted a suggestion to the government of Bangladesh in the last quarter of 1971 as the countries just gained its independence.

The airline was formerly known as Air Bangladesh International and soon renamed as Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The airline first  operated its domestic flights in 1972 with some of the destinations on the country such as Dhaka-Jessore, Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet routes with a Douglas DC-3 and Douglas Dakota an World War II vintage which has been a gift from the Bangladesh Air Force.

In 1973 the airline had purchased 4 Fokker F27 from the Netherlands and Australia, which doubles their frequency to Kolkata flight twice a day. Aside from that Boeing 707 was also added to provide flights to London, which also became twice a week flight.

From then on the airline has expanded its routes not only in domestic destinations but also in some countries internationally. However, with the rise of private local carriers in the country, Biman Bangladesh Airlines has dropped by 35 percent with only 162,000 passengers travelling with them in that fiscal years.

During the period the airline has also faced its biggest loss which cost from 120 million dollars. Then after the airline has become a public limited company, Biman Bangladesh Airlines has trimmed numbers of staffs and turned its attention to modernising and maintaining its fleets.

Aside from that the airline has made a deal with the US aircraft manufacturer to procure 10 modern aircraft in able for them to re-start its flights in some international destinations in Europe, Asia and North America.
