Aero Continente was the original name of Nuevo Continente that was established in 1992 and it became the leading airline of Peru. It served chartered and scheduled international and domestic flights. It starts its operation in May 1992 and focused its initial operations on charter work for oil exploration. It was only in 1993 when it operates commercial flights. To take advantage of the tax incentives, the airline was formed in Tarapoto for investment purposes.
The airline’s struggles
Aero Continente had faced major competition during its early stages against Aeroperu, the flag carrier of Peru. It only gains ground over its main rival when Aeroperu faced economic problems. The airline became the country’s largest international air carrier when the Aeroperu terminated its operation in 1999. The Chilean investment group joined Aero Continente to launch the operation of the airline in Chile in the later part of 1999. However, the Aero Continente Chile ceased its operations and assets in June 2202 because of the accusation of Chilean government that the airline personnel were using their airplanes for drug trafficking. The airline was declared bankrupt and lay blame on the Chilean government for the ceased of operation of Aero Continente Chile in favour of LAN Chile.
Moreover, the US government banned the Aero Continente from entering the United States for safety concerns. The worst thing happened when the United States Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control added the airline in the list of blocked persons and Specially Designated Nationals in June 2004. This prohibition makes it illegal for Americans to trade with the airline company thus devastated the Aero Continente. Fernando Zevallos the founder of the Aero Continente was also included in the Foreighn Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act that was enacted by George W. Bush the United States President then. Global Aerospace, Aero Continente’s insurer also suspended its business with the airlines and suspended all the flights in Peru for not having insurance.
Fortunately, the airline restarted its operation to save the company as well as the employees. The new operation and ownership was under the Nuevo Continente that was owned by the employees. However, again it was included in the list of Specially Designated Nationals that made Nuevo Continente to terminate its operation in 2005.
